DeltaTapeless is our own LiDAR measurement app for iPhone: walls, rooms and parking lots measured with one person, no tape and no second trip. No other measuring app needed.
It runs on real sites today. This is what we built, why, and what we had to solve along the way.
What we were trying to build
Measuring on site has barely changed in fifty years. A tape, a second person on the other end, a notebook, a photo of the notebook. Then someone types it into a spreadsheet at the office and hopes nothing got swapped.
The scanning apps that tried to fix this made a different mistake. They scan everything, hand you a 3D model and leave you to dig out the one number you came for. That works for a designer. It does not work for a painter, a paving contractor or a site engineer with four visits before lunch.
So we set one rule: start with the job, not the scan.
How it works, in three steps
- 01Pick the job. Wall, Room or Parking. The app sets up the capture for that job before you start.
- 02Walk and scan. The LiDAR sensor reads the space as you move, and you see the geometry build on screen, so you know it is captured before you leave.
- 03Export and send. Dimensioned PDF, data file or share link, straight into the quote or report.
From walking in to sending the plan takes under two minutes.
Challenge 1: One app, three very different jobs
A wall, a room and a car park look nothing alike to a sensor. A general "scan everything" mode gets all three half right. We split the app into three capture modules, and the user picks one first:
- Wall Scan: one surface only. Height, width and net area, with door and window openings taken off automatically. The fastest module and the one people open most.
- Room Scan: walk the perimeter once and get a floor plan with walls, doors and windows, every dimension labelled.
- Parking Scan: walk the lot and get bay widths, aisle widths, total area and the position of kerbs, columns and obstructions.
Because the app knows what it is looking for, it can ignore everything else in the scene. That is what keeps the result to the numbers the user actually needs.
Challenge 2: Turning a noisy point cloud into a number you can bill
Phone LiDAR does not give clean lines. It gives thousands of points, with noise at every edge, and the edges are exactly where a measurement comes from. A wall 1.74 m wide can easily read a few centimetres off if the app trusts the outermost points.
Our approach is to find the surface first and the edges second. The app locks on to the wall plane, then confirms each edge against that plane before it reports a figure. On screen the user sees an outline of the wall the app has locked on to and an "all edges confirmed" signal before the number is final. If an edge is not confirmed, there is no number yet.
Challenge 3: Openings, deducted without asking
For a painter or a tiler the number that matters is the net area: the wall minus its doors and windows. Doing that by hand is where most quantity mistakes happen. Wall Scan detects openings in the locked surface and takes them off automatically, so the figure on the result screen is the one that goes into the quote.
Challenge 4: No signal, no problem
Measuring happens in basements, building shells and remote sites. Capture and measurement run entirely on the phone, with no upload and no wait for a server. Processing a wall takes a few seconds, on the device.
What it does on site
These results were captured on a working site on 15 September 2026, not from a render:
| Capture | Result |
|---|---|
| Wall Scan, 27 seconds | Wall locked, figure updating live as it measures |
| Wall Scan result | Width 1.74 m · height 2.74 m · net area 4.8 m², all edges confirmed |
Who it is for
- Painters and interior contractors: wall areas and material quantities on the walkthrough.
- Paving and line-marking contractors: quote a car park without tracing a satellite image.
- EV charger installers: bay geometry, clearances and cable runs on the survey visit.
- Facility managers, interior designers and property teams: measured rooms and floor plans from one walkthrough.

Where it is now
DeltaTapeless runs on iPhone Pro models with LiDAR, with three modules: Wall Scan, Room Scan and Parking Scan. It comes from the same team as DeltaARBIM, our AR BIM app in use on three job sites, and shares the same experience of making phone LiDAR work on real sites.
